Newick's Corner - Quotable Quotes
Forester Newick's Favorite Sayings

Those of us in the Marathon Sail and Power Squadron have come to appreciate Forester's sayings of the day, which he and Helen passed to us at Saturday morning breakfasts. We thought we'd share these with others. We're sorry to report that Forester passed away on January 1, 2013. His "nuggets of thought" live on here, and he lives on in the thoughts of family and friends. His wife Helen joined Forester on June 19, 2021.
I (Gregory Absten) continue to add additional philosophical quotes to Forester's original list.

Succinct words of marital advice from a pastor celebrating his 66th wedding anniversary:
Smell Good and Keep Your Mouth Shut!  It Works!

Learn these two things: Never be discouraged because good things get on so slowly here; and never fail daily to do that good which lies next to your hand. Do not be in a hurry, but be diligent. Enter into the sublime patience of the Lord. Be charitable in view of it. God can afford to wait; why cannot we, since we have Him to fall back upon? Let patience have her perfect work and bring forth her celestial fruits. Trust to God to weave your little thread into a web, though the patterns show it not yet. - Scottish pastor George Macdonald - early 1900's

I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land. - Harriet Tubman -

I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts.
Herman Melville - writer, poet

Wicked people "are in fact" often ... punished. Nothing is more common on earth; and all the woes of hell will be an illustration of the principle. Out of all evil God shall produce good; and even from the punishment of the damned themselves, he will take occasion to illustrate his own perfections, and, in that display of his just character, promote the happiness of holy beings.  - Papa Roy Coy in his daily devotions

The entire Universe around us, and us within it, are merely manifestations of a thought of God. The question then becomes - what is the essence of  "thoughts" of God?

Note written to my 3 month newborn son in August of 1980 (rediscovered 2020):
August 15, 1980 - Dear Son, Welcome to the Universe & planet earth Eric Nathan. I wish you well in learning your lessons, accepting God, and growing to be born into real life when you leave this place. Be the best you can be, follow the bible as the truth, and don't let other people tell you in absolute terms what the bible says. That's between you and God, as translated by the spirit inside of you. That's why it's called the "living word". Let your imagination fly and don't be afraid to dream, even when it involves risk. Fears should be markers, not the bars of a cage. The emotional highs of life are worth the counterbalancing depressions. You'll find whatever you look for, so look for the good, and learn in every situation. Enjoy life, and love people.
Love, Dad - Gregory Absten to son Eric in August of 1980.
